Vitamin B12 Injections

About Vitamin B12 Injections

When you’re lacking in vitamin B12, it can cause anaemia. When vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed by your body, it is called pernicious anaemia and is the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK.

If you are suffering from anaemia and want to find out about vitamin B12 injections, contact our doctors at IPSA medical.

Anaemia Symptoms

If you are anaemic, you may experience the following symptoms. These symptoms are caused by the reduced amount of oxygen in your body.

  • Tiredness
  • Lethargy
  • Feeling faint
  • Breathlessness.

Some symptoms are less common, such as headaches, palpitations, loss of appetite, altered taste, and ringing in the ears – known as tinnitus. You may also look pale.

Treating Vitamin B12 Deficiency at IPSA

The  doctors at IPSA will take time to go through your clinical history with you. We can offer you an immediate examination, and your appointment will take place in a clean and quiet environment

If required we will take blood tests immediately to ascertain your levels of vitamin B12 and these will return in 24 hrs. The results of your blood test will help us guide you to the most effective treatment.

An effective treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency is regular injections of vitamin B12, which last from 3 to 6 months.

If we decide that these injections are the best course of action for you, our doctors will recommend you have about six injections, one every 2 to 4 days, to build up your body’s store of Vitamin B12.

When your body has a store of  vitamin B12, it can last for several months. Afterwards, the IPSA doctor will usually administer another injection every three months to top up your vitamin B12 levels.

If your symptoms return before the end of three months, you may have to have another injection sooner. This rarely happens and your doctor at IPSA will discuss this in full during your appointment.

We may recommend further bloods tests depending on your clinical symptoms. These tests can all be arranged immediately and we will discuss the results with you on a one-to-one basis.

If your lack of vitamin B12 is related to your diet and not pernicious anaemia, then after your initial injections, our doctor may follow the treatment up with dietary supplements. Or we may recommend twice-yearly injections instead.

If you have pernicious anaemia, you will need injections all your life. You should not experience any side-effects from having these injections.
